MRSA--Now Killing More Americans Than AIDS

MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staph aureus infection) may respond to tea tree oil, which doesn't cause resistance. Read about the research comparing tea tree oil to drug treatments. This may mean that use of hygiene products with tea tree oil could help prevent the spread of this serious infection. 85% of MRSA infections are associated with health care facilities and are far more likely to lead to invasive status than the 15% of cases referred to as "community acquired" MRSA. 2/3 of the health care exposure-related MRSA occurred AFTER having left the facility. At most risk: over 65, having invasive medical procedures, having a weakened immune system. At least risk: over 4 through teen years. Invasive MRSA accounted for more deaths in 2005 than from AIDS. There are some early reports about a specialized honey that is successful in treating MRSA, as well as hard-to-heal wounds, burns, and certain gastrointestinal ulcers. Click here to look at licensed producers of these honey items. .....quick, before the FDA calls for it to be by prescription!

WHAT ABOUT GARDASIL for HPV?

Watch this first! or click here for NVIC;s info on the vaccine. Then access these >a href="http://www.nvic.org/Diseases/HPV/HPVHOME.htm" target="new">articles on Gardasil. For more, read HPV Vaccine Researcher Blasts Marketing. By the way, a study estimating the American population prevalence of HPV infection published in the Feb 28, 2007 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association found that only 3.4% of women aged 14 to 59 yrs were infected with one of the HPV types in Gardasil; only 2% were infected with one of the two types that are in the vaccine and are associated with cervical cancer. I notice that the commercials don't mention the 1300% increase in Guillain-Barre syndrome in those gals getting Gardasil, some in conjunction with other vaccines. The CDC has put out defense of the vaccine with respect to the GBS claims, basically saying that the rate is lower than the rate expected for some other vaccines. I'm fairly certain Aristotle would not be impressed.

SOMETHING SMELLS FISHY

The FDA has again demonstrated why government should NEVER be involved in health care and can NEVER be part of the answer to rising costs! True to usual form, the FDA has decided to allow Reliant Pharmaceuticals to sell Lovaza as a prescription drug for high triglycerides. What's wrong with that? Lovaza is a patented triglyceride-lowering medication (omega-3-acid ethyl esters) and a month's supply will cost (you or your health insurance company) about $200! PLUS, they are allowed to advertise that, "Every other omega-3 product is a dietary supplement, which means it is not approved for the treatment of any specific disease or medical condition, like very high triglycerides." Not approved..... not approved does not mean that high quality fish oil dietary supplements won't work for high triglycerides--only that they are not approved by the FDA and, therefore, cannot advertise with that benefit. Hmmm, wonder where the company got the idea of making such a product for high triglycerides in the first place--the volumes of anecdotal evidence with fish oil "dietary supplements", of course! Instead of the FDA looking at the many research studies and endorsing the great benefits of fish oil dietary supplements, they acted to remove all competition for the makers of Lovaza, allowing them to set the price at 10 times the cost of a dietary supplement. Insurance companies will pay for Lovaza at $200/month and will not be responsible for high quality fish oil/omega-3 dietary supplements. Hmmm.... Insurance premiums go up.... employers pay more.... workers are laid off and co-pays rise.... Medicare (a government program) REQUIRES recipients to have a drug coverage policy and many seniors will switch to getting scripts for Lovaza instead of continuing to pay $20 out-of-pocket for their omega-3 supplements. Not surprisingly, the FDA also recently began requiring supplement companies to set up "adverse reaction" reporting methods--many small companies will not be able to afford compliance and will be pushed out of business. Again, less competition will lead to higher prices. When will politicians see the unholy alliance between the FDA and Big Pharma? Can you imagine the unholy alliances that will pop up if politicians get into it under the guise of universal healthcare?

WARNING: CATARACT SURGERY and FLOMAX

Flomax is a drug used to treat enlarged prostate glands, thus is frequently taken at a time in life when cataract surgery is performed. Unfortunately, it can cause complications during cataract surgery. In 2005, the FDA warned that tamsulosin can cause a surgical condition called intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS). Tamsulosin may cause IFIS even if patients stop taking the drug before surgery. Male patients who have taken tamsulosin or other alpha-1 blocker drugs should be sure to tell their eye surgeon. The surgeon may need to use different types of techniques to reduce the risk of IFIS. Be aware that there are natural alternatives to drugs that work as well or better, without side effects, for benign prostate enlargement.
