As many of you know, our healthy chocolate profits go to the three children I support through Childcare Ministries--one in India, one in Africa, and Mitchivena Dupiton in Poste Pierrot, Haiti. Her 9th birthday is January 16th and I have not yet been able to confirm her safety, although there are indications she may be outside of the immediate quake area. Unfortunately, aid seems to be slow at the distribution end. During emergencies, we all like to know that our donations will be used properly and urgently. I recommend donation through Child Care Ministries, or Help Haiti Heal, as the Free Methodist Church has had a framework for ongoing support to educate, feed, and provide medical care to Haiti's children since 1966. Their donation page allows donations as small as $5 (a trip to Starbucks), so nearly everyone can afford to participate in the effort. Another tried and true relief organization is Cross International, which also has an established, pre-quake presence in Haiti. These entities know intimately the needs and culture of Haiti and have an established track record for being good stewards of both individual donations to food funds and monthly support of individual children. In the Port-au-Prince area alone, International Child Care Ministries has 16 schools serving the needs of 1,867 sponsored children. They have over 8,900 sponsored children throughout Haiti, but serve the needs of nearly 25,000 children through 117 schools there. Whether or not you can donate, please "watch and pray"--we are awaiting news of survivors. I have posted a picture of my sponsored child--sometimes it helps to put a face on the great needs in Haiti.
